About the Item

Label: Señal S.A.Hecho en Mexico. Cocobolo wood and black leather mid-century modern magazine rack from the sixties. The leather has a beautiful sensual feel and is in excellent condition. The cocobolo gives it a warm yet unique look with its elegant dark swirls that contrast the clean cut and straight lines of the wood.    Don S. Shoemaker was an American artist born in Nebraska. He was studied painting at the Fine Arts Institute of Chicago. In the early 1940s, he visited Mexico on his honeymoon and, enchanted by the country, decided to move there permanently. For a while, he continued to work as a painter, but he couldnt resist the lure of the exotic wood all around him. He started his small design factory called SEÑAL, S.A. in the late fifties, employing local traditionally trained craftsmen. His use of rare exotic wood on modernist designs quickly became very popular, and rich Mexican families quickly ended up redecorating their entire homes with Shoemaker’s designs. His work was also popular in the US, particularly Houston, Los Angeles and Chicago.  When he died in the early 2000s, the SEÑAL factory dissolved. Today, his elegant yet warm designs are greatly appreciated amongst modernist lovers.

Yanagi Soetsu (1889 – 1961), also known as Yanagi Muneyoshi, was a Japanese art critic, philosopher, and founder of the Mingei (folk craft) movement in Japan in the late 1920s and 1930s. His son, Sori Yanagi, was a renowned industrial designer. In 1916, Yanagi made his first trip to Korea out of curiosity about Korean crafts.
