About the Item

Paul Mayén designed the exceptional umbrella stand for Habitat International in the 1970s. This stunning Mid-Century modernist aluminum umbrella holder features an industrial Machine Age design with a large, double-round shape and removable inserts. The piece was crafted circa 1970. There is no visible designer's mark. This umbrella holder embodies the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the era, offering a perfect balance of style and utility for discerning collectors and design enthusiasts, a refined fusion of industrial Machine Age aesthetics and functional artistry. Dimensions: 21 in wide (53.5 cm) by 12 in deep (30.5 cm) by 25 in high (64 cm). Note: The wooden stick is not included in the sale. Note: Paul Mayén (May 31, 1916 – November 3, 2000) was a Spanish architect and industrial designer recognized for his contributions to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Born in La Línea de la Concepción, Andalucia, Spain, he pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cooper Union in New York City and later obtaining a master's degree from Columbia University during World War II. A skilled industrial designer, Mayén shared his expertise by teaching advertising design at both Cooper Union and The New School in Manhattan. His artistic vision extended to furniture design, with his lamps, tables, and other pieces securing a place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Additionally, he was the founder of Habitat, Intrex, and Architectural Supplements, Inc., leaving a lasting impact on modern design.
