About the Item

A masterpiece of design and craftsmanship, Taher’s Chemirik’s ‘Calligraphie III’ is his first screen to mix brass and steel and the latest addition to the ‘Interior Treasures’ (‘Bijoux d’Intérieur’) collection. The piece alternates empty and occupied space created by floating, curved lines of elegant handwriting made of long waves of brass and steel. The ‘Calligraphie III’ screen’s four and a half meters unwind like a swirl of flat bands in a magical structure defying gravity. Taher Chemirik was named one of the world’s most influential designers in 2007 by Time Magazine for his jewelry signature designs using oversized links, drop-like petals, and ebony wood. Three of his pieces are included in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. 'In my jewelry, I use fine stones, gold, and silver, but also wood, coral, and hard stones. I like to mix materials in my furniture as well, in particular ones that defy time and are in line with the tradition of the decorative arts – brass, wood, and hard stones’. The brass and the steel are brushed, creating a beige matted effect on the brass. Taher Chemirik thus re-invents the approach to typical brass in furniture, treating it as if it were jewelry.   A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (ENSAD), jewelry designer Taher Chemirik has collaborated with some of the world’s most prestigious fashion labels, including Chloé, Balenciaga, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Roger Vivier. With the "Interior Treasures" ("Bijoux d'Intérieur") furniture collection exclusively produced and sold by Galerie BSL, Chemirik reveals the entire extent of his talent, that identifies him as a poet and architect of the object. Each piece is unique, hand-made in Paris in fine and timeless materials, such as brass, copper and rare hard stones. His works have the beauty of a contemporary sculpture, dense as well as sensual, refined and dramatic. Their strong presence vouches for the panache of an artist who expresses himself in volume, in tune with the scale of jewelry as well as with pieces with larger dimensions. Taher Chemirik’s oxidized steel ‘Calligraphie II’ Screen was acquired in 2014 as a gift for the permanent collection of the Museum of Art and Design in New York. The ‘Calligraphie III’ Screen is a signed, unique piece.
