About the Item
A collection of two framed Pre-Columbian textile fragments from Chancay and Chimu culture circa 10th-15th century, which thrived in the Northern and Central coast of nowadays Peru until they were conquered by Inca Empire. One frame consists of four small fragments from various textile panels. Three showcase motifs of hominoid with two being full figure and the third being the face only. These human-like figures were often found on Chimu and Chancay textiles. They often pose as a frontal form with raised hands, warrior like. The last fragment has a more abstract pattern of a reminiscent of the sea bird, another common motif in Pre-Columbian textile. The second frame presents a larger horizontal panel with hanging tassel strips. The design showcases geometrical stylization of interlinked bord-head and figures with a human-like head on a fish-bone body.
The measurements for the two pieces are 16"w x 20.7"h x1"d and 24"w x 8.85"h x 1"d respectively. The size shown on the listing is for packing purpose.
The fragments are all conserved and sewed onto a white linen backing and framed under a plexiglass shadow box. Ready for display.
A wonderful example of the Chancay textile art that focuses on figurative designs.
For reference and illustration of humanoid motif, see page 141-156 of "Ancient Peruvian Textiles" by F. Anton.
