Japanese Gilt Seated Kannon Figure, circa 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Intricately carved and finished with gilt black lacquer, this seated figure depicts the bodhisattva Guanyin, known in Japanese Buddhism as Kannon. Described as the "Buddha of Infinite Compassion," Kannon is the embodiment of mercy and makes himself available to all who call upon him with all their mind.
Kannon is depicted here seated in diamond position upon a double lotus plinth, set above a stepped base. He is dressed in gracefully draped robes and wears a tall crown bearing a minuscule figure of Amida, the Buddha of Infinite Light. He has a serene expression of calm and holds his right hand in the abhaya mudra, a gesture of comfort, blessing, and protection. Backed by a magnificent leaf-form nimbus, this Kannon figure...

Japanese 19th Century Porcelain Imari Plate with Painted Blue and White Décor
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Japanese Imari porcelain plate from the 19th century, with hand-painted blue and white foliage, tree and architecture décor. Created in Japan during the 19th century, this Imari porcelain plate features a delicate blue and white décor divided into four distinct sections: lucious foliage, blooming trees, large leaves and a traditional house with mountains in the background occupy the composition beautifully. Light blue color alternates with darker touches, thus creating a lively sense of depth. Imari is a style of porcelain named after the Japanese port from which it was shipped from, beginning in the late 17th century. The plate has a green mark on its back. Bordered by a scalloped edge, this 19th century Japanese hand-painted Imari porcelain plate will make for a lovely addition to any home décor, perhaps placed on a commode, side table or console! Pair of Antique Japanese Imari Jars Meiji Period Circa 1880
Located in Katonah, NY
Both jars are hand-painted in traditional Imari designs. They feature beautiful waterside scenes painted in cobalt blue and two shades of iron red, all with gilded accents.
The colors are vibrant, and the scenes are complex.
One jar features a shoreline, while the other scene features a cresting wave.
Above the main scenes on each jar, there are medallions adorned with gilded floral decorations. Additionally, a ring of patterns inspired by Japanese textiles encircles the shoulder and base of each jar.
The hand-painted panels on the reverse side mirror the designs on the front but include many subtle variations.
On the side of each jar, there is a classic Imari depiction of a vase set on a garden terrace.
These exquisite pieces were crafted in Japan during the Meiji Period, around 1880.
Dimensions: 15" tall x 7" diameter at the widest point
Condition: Excellent.
Price: $2,800

19th Century Japanese Screen, Deer in Spring, Maruyama Shijo School
Located in Kyoto, JP
A six-panel Japanese folding screen from the leading Maruyama-Shijo artist Okamoto Toyohiko (1773-1845). Simply featuring three deer and a few sprigs of foliage on a sumptuous gold-leaf background this work emphasizes naturalistic expression and a masterful use of negative space. Reduced to its most basic elements, the blank spaces inspire imagination and evoke the smells, sounds and even the weather of the scene. Whilst deer are traditionally depicted in association with autumn, here the green growth on the tops of the foliage indicates the season of spring. The work references Maruyama Okyo’s two-panel deer screen...

By Kinkozan
Located in Newark, England
Signed Kinkozan 金光山
From our Japanese collection, we are delighted to offer this Japanese Satsuma Vase by Kinkozan. The vase is potted in globular form with a tightly pinched neck and rolled top rim beautifully decorated with four highly detailed individual panelled scenes. The first a Geisha baring a gilt basket with her child playing with a fan infant of a gilt fence encompassing blossoming foliage and bamboo plants. The second scene depicts two birds, a Red Headed Japanese Wood Pigeon and a white dove in the foreground with a similar gilt fence with blossoming kiku flowers (chrysanthemums). The third scene is painted as a bustling village community with multiple figures going about their daily jobs, a central Palanquins can be seen with two figures carrying a seating figure. To the background a mountainous river landscape can viewed bordering the top left corner. The final scene appears similar to the opposing one with birds swooping high above a polychrome Japanese...
