US Air Corps in Australia Vintage Military Pennant, circa WWII
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a souvenir felt pennant celebrating the servicemen and women of the U.S. Air Corps who were based in Australia and fought alongside members of the Royal Australian Air Force during WWII. The navy pennant features a printed red outline of the Australian continent with the U.S. Air Corps “wings” superimposed on it. Below, the text reads, “Souvenir of U.S. Air Corps in Australia.” At the very bottom of the pennant is the U.S. Air Corps symbol. Framed according to archival standards, this pennant symbolizes the collaborative partnership between the United States and Australia during the height of the Second World War in the Pacific Theater.
Following the swift Japanese conquest of the Philippines and East Indies in late 1941, the remaining servicemen of the United States Army Air Force in the Pacific eventually relocated to Australia, to join other US and Australian units, including the Fifth Air Force, and regroup. The Fifth Air Force was placed under the command of Major General George Kenney in July of 1942. Their new goal was to seize air superiority over New Guinea and gain back air coverage over the Solomon Sea.
General Kenney worked with U.S. Army General MacArthur...

Mid-Century Australian Modern Teak Sofa & Armchairs by Parker Furniture, 1950s
By Parker Furniture
Located in Warszawa, Mazowieckie
This impressive set of sofa and two armchairs was designed and produced by the Australian company Parker Furniture in 1956. Parker has a legacy of creating some of the finest Mid-Century furniture. These eco-friendly seats are no exception. In an elegant, deep design with perfect proportions, there are simple pillows covered with a characteristic designer material in the color of royal blue, which complements the scultured structure of the frame. The cushions can be raised and the pieces have a spring frame. Elegant, aerodynamic arches are embedded in a low-line solid teak frame that creates an ultra-streamlined 20th century classic. Parker reflects the lightness of form present in the best Mid-Century design and this highly organic living-room set by Parker are a great example of a coveted modernist style. Clean lines and a relaxed profile come together to create a comfortable and stylish pair with a timeless feel. The beauty of these elements can be seen in thoughtful details. The sharp angles visible in the armrests and rear slats add sophistication to this forward-looking design. The set is signed with a label on the wooden frame and an insert on the cushions. Sleek low-back style and sophisticated design are examples of Parker's form from the 1950s.
Armchair has 75x69x73cm. The height of seat is 42 cm
Parker Furniture began as ‘Dagger and Parker’, a partnership formed between craftsman Alf Dagger, and salesman Jack Parker, after the depression era. From humble beginnings, the company quickly grew, making government tender furniture. Originally, the company made mainly traditional style furniture – reproductions of antique or art deco styles. In the mid 1940s, Tony Parker...

'Beach Camp' Modernist Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery, 1984
By Anne Montgomery
Located in Melbourne, AU
Anne Montgomery has been considered for many years one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett and Lina Bryans, her work is now recognised as an important part of Australian modernism.
The breadth and quality of Montgomery's work over a long lifetime has always been appreciated by other artists. As Australian women artists in the mid Century period were relegated to the fringes of the establishment, they freely explored their own vision and developed their own style. Montgomery's work richly deserves the attention it's now receiving.
This work shows Montgomery's unique perception and expression of colour in the Australian landscape. Her use of oil on board gives her work a robust structure but the inclusion of ink sketching in the work gives it a delicate texture. Her foliage and grasses tickle, her fabric floats, trees dance - her landscapes are in constant movement.
This painting depicts a family camping under canvas amongst the Tea...

Jug and Shell Still Life Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery
By Anne Montgomery
Located in Melbourne, AU
This small but lovely work is an excellent example of Montgomery's joyfully experimental modernism. It is a sketch in oil on composition board.
A table and jug are heavily outlined. The shape of a white seashell is superimposed, with a ghostly idea of it's internal spiral and speckled surface sketched in. The table surface is covered in sgraffito curls while heavy brush strokes build texture in the background. Montgomery's painting vibrates with lively observations of colour and texture.
It was purchased from the artist's own studio (the address is penciled on the back) for a single owner collection, then passed down by descent.
Anne Montgomery has for many years been one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett...

Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978
By Shunichi Inoue
Located in Melbourne, AU
A wonderful example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency.
We love the potency of this very simple form - it has a powerful presence, connoting stillness, composure. For some reason it makes me think of the moon. It has the same still, calm, abiding presence.
Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years.
He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay.
He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery...
