Her Majesty’s Vase: A horse racing trophy by John Samuel Hunt
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This silver presentation vase is a small replica of the classical Roman ‘Warwick Vase’. The body is cast and chased with fruiting vines below the rim. The central field has a continuous band with bearded Bacchic heads floating above a lion’s mask and pelt. The applied handles comprise gnarled twisted vine stems. The spreading stem is set on a square foot which in turn sits on an ebonised wooden plinth base. The plinth is applied with two vacant laurel wreath cartouches and two rectangular plaques, one finely engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms and the other inscribed “Plymouth, Devonport and Cornwall Races 1845, the gift of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, Augustus Coryton Esqr, W. R. Fortescue Esqr, Stewards” and “Her Majesty’s Vase, value 100gs., for three-year-old and upwards – Heats, about two miles, starting at the T.Y.C. Starting-post, once round, to the Grand Stand Winning-post.” Fully marked and stamped on the side of the foot ‘Hunt & Roskell Late Storr & Mortimer 2225’. English, assayed for London 1845.
Provenance: Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Sir John Barker-Mill, Baronet of Mottisfont.Thence by descent.

19th-Century Detailed Hand-Coloured Lithograph of a Large Medieval Siege Tower
Located in Langweer, NL
19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of a Large Medieval Siege Tower with Details
Description: This finely executed hand-coloured lithograph presents a massive 'medieval siege tower', complete with structural details and mechanisms used during large-scale sieges. Taken from the 1842 publication 'Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums', this work by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and Dr. Franz Kottenkamp highlights the engineering ingenuity of siege warfare during the Middle Ages.
The central focus of the illustration is the monumental siege tower, meticulously depicted with wooden reinforcements, a sloped base, and numerous small windows for archers and infantry. Wheels at the foundation highlight the mobility of this immense structure, while a wooden floor plan in the top right corner provides an aerial view of its grid-based layout. Additionally, the inset diagrams on the left showcase key mechanical components, including pulley systems and structural beams used to assemble or operate the tower effectively.
In the foreground, two smaller siege devices are displayed, likely for additional artillery or defensive support. The rolling landscape, complete with castles and distant hills, adds a scenic backdrop that complements the detailed technical rendering.
Condition: This lithograph remains in very good condition, with well-preserved hand-colouring and sharp, clear lines. Minor age-toning and light foxing add to the print’s antique charm without diminishing its visual impact.
Ideal for collectors of military history, medieval warfare, or engineering art...

Vibrant Handcolored Depictions of Japanese Costumes from 1844
Located in Langweer, NL
Vibrant Depictions of 19th Century Japanese Costumes from Auguste Wahlen’s Masterpiece
These prints depict various figures from Japanese society, ranging from a humble fisherman's family to a nobleman, a ceremonial samurai, and infantry musicians.
Each figure is intricately dressed in traditional attire, reflecting their status and roles.
The prints were created by the artist Auguste Wahlen as part of his celebrated work *"Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde"* (Customs, Manners, and Dress of All the Peoples of the World), published in 1843.
The vibrant colors and fine detailing were achieved using lithography, a printmaking technique that involves drawing on a flat surface with a grease-based medium and using a chemical process to transfer the image. The accuracy of the costumes and lively scenes make these lithographs especially appealing. The contrast between the vivid costumes and soft shading adds depth, capturing the essence of Japanese life during this period.
Attraction of the Prints:
The appeal lies in their historic and ethnographic value, showcasing detailed attire and customs from another era, accompanied by the richness of the lithography technique. The vibrant colors, clean lines, and the representation of both nobility and common folk offer viewers a rich visual experience, portraying a distant culture with authenticity and grace.

1844 Lithograph of a Bukharan Uzbek: Traditional Attire and Craft
Located in Langweer, NL
"1844 Lithograph of a Bukharan Uzbek: Traditional Attire and Craft"
Description: This 1844 lithograph captures a traditional Bukharan Uzbek man, from the renowned series "Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde" by Auguste Wahlen.
Published in Paris using the technique of handcoloured lithography, enhanced with Arabic gum on vellin paper, this print vividly portrays the rich cultural attire unique to Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
The man's elaborate robe and distinctive headwear highlight the regional fashion and craftsmanship. The print’s appeal lies in its detailed depiction of historical dress and accessories, offering a window into the cultural diversity of Central Asia. Such prints are treasured for their historical value and intricate artistry, making them highly desirable to collectors and enthusiasts of ethnographic art.
The lithograph depicting a man from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, offers several intriguing cultural and historical insights:
1. Traditional Attire: The attire of the Bukharan man, particularly the elaborate robe and turban, is a rich display of Uzbek textile craftsmanship. Traditional robes, often made from silk and cotton, are adorned with intricate ikat patterns—a dyeing technique where threads are dyed before weaving. This style is emblematic of Uzbekistan's well-known textile industry.
2. Turban Significance: The turban, known locally as a "doppa" or "tubeteika," is more than just practical headwear; it serves as a cultural symbol of status and identity. The style, color, and way it is worn can convey information about the wearer's social status, region, and even his clan affiliations.
3. Historical Context: Bukhara was a pivotal Silk Road city, making it a melting pot of cultures, languages, and religions. The diverse influences are reflected in the traditional clothing, which blends Persian, Turkic, and nomadic styles.
4. Artistic Technique: The use of handcoloured lithography in the 19th century allowed for high-quality, detailed prints that were more accessible to the European public. This technique involved drawing on limestone with a greasy medium, then using water and oil-based ink to print vibrant images, which were then painted by hand.
5. Cultural Preservation: Prints like this serve not only as artwork but also as historical documents that preserve and share the cultural heritage of regions less known to the Western world at the time. They played a crucial role in educating and influencing perceptions about distant cultures during the 19th century.
This print, therefore, is not just a beautiful piece of art but a deep well of cultural history and craftsmanship, reflecting the rich tapestry of life in Central Asia during the 19th century.
