Antique South Caucasian Karabagh Region Long Rug
About the Item
An antique South Caucasian Karabagh region long rug with a vertical row of five octagons on a clear red ground. This is a truly outstanding example of Caucasian weaving. The wool quality is excellent, very soft to the touch and the dyes are first class, giving clear bright colours. The balance of the design and the wonderful yellow ground border sets this rug apart from most other Caucasians of this period.
A very similar rug is illustrated in 'Qarajeh to Quba' by Raoul E. Tschebull, Hali Publications, plate 41; page 174. In this publication, the rug is attributed to the village of Boyuk Bahmanli, on the Aras river in the Fuzuli district of Karabagh.
The rug is in excellent condition with very slight wear and good pile. There is some corrosion to the black as one would expect. The rug is suitable for normal domestic use and has been hand washed.
