This stunning antique Tabriz carpet, woven in the prestigious Benlian workshop, is distinguished by an ivory background layered with a large-scale all-over pattern of multicoloured scrolling palmettes. This design derives from 17th-century Safavid Vase carpets and is one of the most coveted designs for antique Tabrizes. Rugs of this type were commissioned by the Armenian-British Benlian company, which had a workshop active in Tabriz during the first half of the 20th Century specialising in weaving carpets based on classical patterns. These were woven with exacting standards, employing the finest grade of wool dyed in a range of extraordinary colours. Benlian Tabriz carpets are especially appreciated for their hard-wearing quality, and can sustain heavy traffic because of the tightly packed fine weave. Its perfect condition elect this example to the rank of best-of-type.
