India Amritsar carpet early 1900s light background and burgundy and antique pink patterns

About the Item

The city of Amritsar, located in northwestern India, became an Indian carpet and rug weaving center in the 19th century, when Maharaja Ranjit Singh annexed Kashmir's thriving shawl-weaving center. The rise of British supremacy in 1850, along with the exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London, captured the public's attention and triggered the extraordinary development of carpet production in Amritsar. Under the influence of European carpet importers, the establishment of looms, and the availability of high-quality wool from sheep raised in the nearby mountains and valleys, Amritsar carpet weavers adapted their traditional carpet designs to match Western tastes and European demand. While other Indian weaving centers, which had been in existence for a couple of centuries, had their designs influenced primarily by ancient Persian carpet art, Amritsar artisans developed a totally unique and original style that remains highly desirable today because of the variety of decorations and the refinement of the color palette with earthy, muted hues including light blue, yellow, teal, burgundy, and mauve.
