About the Item
This Qashqai Persian carpet featuring King Bahram and the Lion, circa 1940, consists of hand-knotted handspun sheep's wool with a hand-knotted handspun camel hair background and vegetable dyes. Its central field depicts the story of king Bahram and the lion from Ferdowsi's "Shahnameh." Here the lion represents the inner evils and weaknesses of the human ego, which Bahram must defeat in order to become King of Persia. Balanced above and below them is the Zoroastrian symbol of Faravahar, the angel of goodness, and in each of the rug's four corners are the figures of the lion and the horse. The lion represents the king and the horse represents the people, two entities which need to become one in order for the kingdom to prosper. Vibrant hues balance the neutral background tones of the field and border, with golds, reds, and blues distributed among shades of cream and camel. Lines of four throughout the border represent the four elements of earth, wind, fire and water, while peacocks in the field represent royalty and flowers throughout the design symbolize purity. This carpet is in excellent vintage condition and measures 3'6" x 5'5".

Vintage Qashqai Animal Rug, Red, Wool, Circa 1940s, 4’ x 6’
Located in New York, NY
This Persian Qashqai carpet circa 1940 was created using a wool warp, wool weft, hand-knotted pure wool pile and natural vegetable dyes. The central lion design is rather striking in the way it contrasts the carpet's red field, as well as in its detailed facial features. In Persian folklore, the lion symbolizes kingship, prestige, and the protection of sacred spaces. Its power is beautifully conveyed by the weaver of this piece, who created this carpet for ceremonious purpose. Taking a closer look at the border, one can see Qashqai villagers dancing in celebratory robes, indicating that this was likely woven as a wedding carpet...
