Late 19th Century Red Serapi Heriz Carpet with Central Indigo Octagon

About

Although it is centered around a small rosette drawn within a deep indigo octagon, this long Serapi Heriz carpet nevertheless conveys the freedom and elegance of an all-over design type. Leaves and foliage are drawn in soft blues against a madder red ground, modulating from aquamarine to turquoise to form quatrefoil patterns. A central palmette is drawn at both the top and bottom of the field, which provide subtle boundary demarcations. The piece is framed by a Classic Northwest Persian linked palmette border, drawn quite delicately for a Heriz area rug, which magnifies the grand scale of the field.
