Swedish Flatweave Rug Rollakan, 1950-1970
About the Item
Very interesting example of Swedish Röllakan measuring 294 x 196 cm linen warp and wool weft handmade with the flat weaving technique. Depending on the weaver, all seams between the color blocks can make the fabric either look the same on both sides or not. The threads are twisted in double twist at the color changes, resulting in characteristic braid like stripes on the back side. Because of this, Swedish flat weaves are often reversible. Don’t make the mistake of judging the seemingly simple decoration as trivial. Simplicity is a very meaningful concept. You may wish to discover the criteria behind the color alternance in the decorative motifs.
