The central scene is enclosed within a border that is characterized by upper and lower central cartouches, supported by putti. It contains a star above, and the armorial of Pierre Guischard below. Six additional cartouches containing the symbols of the Evangelists run through the rest of the border, interspersed with fruiting and flowering elements, decorative swags, and birds.

A rare and highly collectible example of 19th-century Caucasian weaving, this square-format Kazak area rug from the late 1800s features the iconic “Memling Gul” medallion pattern—a hallmark of tribal artistry. Handwoven in the rugged mountain villages of the Caucasus, this exquisite piece displays two prominent gul medallions in earthy green and brown, elegantly set against a richly abrash French blue field.
The distinctive ivory border is adorned with vibrant geometric motifs in terracotta and indigo, enhancing the rug’s dynamic contrast and visual depth. The use of saturated natural dyes, asymmetrical patterning, and the rare square proportions elevate this rug into a museum-worthy textile.
