Antique Filikli Turkish Rug with Polychrome Concentric Squares

About the Item

Filikli rugs represent probably the earliest, most primitive form of weaving known to mankind, veritably untouched over the course of a few thousand years. These were originally intended as a woven substitute to fur, hence the long fleecy pile. Filiklis are woven using unspun mohair wool, which is then dip-dyed with the colour of choice; this rudimental method results in a non-uniform dyeing of the yarn, which ultimately contributes in creating a kind of woven sculpture, with long, cascading lustrous polychrome Angora wool in geometric, minimalist patterns. The concentric squares design seen here imparts a strong Modernist feeling to the composition. Bibliography: U. Hirsch, ‘The Fabric of Deities & Kings’, Hali, vol. 13, n. 4, (London, August 1991): 104-111. J.T. Antique Minimalist Jajim Flat-Woven Rug with Vertical Polychrome Stripes
Located in Milan, IT
A graphic tribal kilim composed of two joined panels each containing an array of polychrome vertical stripes in a variety of natural colours. The result is a wool flat-weave with a mirror image pattern. What makes this example rather unique is the richness of the individual colors, obtained from natural dyes, as well the generous width of the vertical stripes. Furthermore, the quality of the individual dyes, which include a wonderful indigo blue and a clear coral red, are indicative of an early vintage. The piece is in pristine condition. The resulting visual effect is highly abstract and reminiscent more of Western contemporary art...
