About the Item

This exquisite antique Sella (saddlebag face), woven in the Sivas region of central Turkey, measures 77 × 69 cm and is a beautiful representation of Turkish tribal art. Originally crafted as part of a larger functional double saddlebag set used by nomadic shepherds and villagers, this piece reflects both practical utility and deep artistic expression. At the center of the composition lies a striking hexagonal medallion, filled with rich tribal symbols and surrounded by multiple angular motifs, protective hooks, and stylized borders. The fantastic wool embroidery features a vivid palette of crimson red, indigo, saffron yellow, ivory, and emerald green, all naturally dyed and harmoniously blended. The top of the piece includes woven loops and knotted tassels, indicating its original use and adding a sculptural, decorative flair rarely preserved in such fine condition. The tight weave, clear geometric symmetry, and attention to color balance reveal a skilled hand likely working within a strong regional tradition. These bags were not only transport containers but were often proudly displayed in tents or homes during gatherings, symbolizing status, dowry wealth, or tribal identity. Today, this Sivas Sella functions as a compelling textile fragment — ideal for collectors of Anatolian folk art or as a framed wall hanging. It remains in good condition with age-appropriate wear and retains its original charm and historical value.
