Made with hand-knotted wool in Turkey circa 1960-1970, this pair of 4x6 vintage rugs represents a rare set of identical pieces from an equally rare provenance—a new addition to Rug & Kilim’s Mid-Century Pasha Collection, a curation of works believed to hail from mid-century Turkish artist Zeki Müren.
On the Design:
Both rugs enjoy identical geometric patterns with a marriage of mid-century modern and Art Deco sensibilities—a particularly eclectic design which admirers of the craft will recognize among Müren’s hallmarks that distinguish his fabulous works. Their colorway is a play of ochre gold and black hues, both rich and sample, with a positive-negative sense of movement in their particular repetition and use of minimalist dimensionality. Keen eyes for detail will further admire the execution of the geometry in this scale—a subtle, yet impressive feat for such an atelier workshop in its period, let alone in twin rugs like so few known from this artist. Müren’s works are considered by many in the field to be some of the most unexpected of their kind, and this set is perhaps an understated exemplar of that and his many talents, including the unique ability to achieve so much beauty with such a limited use of elements that arguably speaks to him as a master weaver. Both mid-century rugs in this pair enjoy an overall good condition for their age and origin. Their pile height has been lowered, which creates the look of a boho-chic, distressed texture throughout each piece. These rugs can also be purchased separately upon request.
