About the Item

A beautiful pair of original "Canada" arm chairs designed by Christian E. Hansen and manufactured at "Fritz Hansen", Copenhagen in 1940. The chairs are made from red stained beech and is in amazing original condition. Late in the 1930s, Fritz’s forward-thinking son, Christian, began experimenting with steam-bending techniques. During this decade, the technique is refined to make Fritz Hansen a world leader in moulded and laminate wood furniture. Looking to German Functionalism, Scandinavian design comes into its own with a lighter, more practical approach that profiles clean lines and function. The Canada Chair was designed by Christian E. Hansen after a trip to Canada and became an influential design on future work from Fritz Hansen including the world famous "Ant" chair series by Arne Jacobsen and several of Hans J. Wegner's iconic chairs.   Both chairs are stamped "F.H." and retains original label under the seat.
