Antique English Regency Lyre Shaped Armchair Cira 1825

About the Item

A wonderful late Regency lyre shaped armchair in the Gillows manner. English Circa 1825. The armchair is of lyre shape with a stop fluted frame, raised on tapering ribbed front legs, terminating on the original brass cup castors. The chair has been reupholstered and re-covered in a Designer's Guild velvet fabric, 'Opera Celadon', with double piped stitching. Described, 'our first easy clean velvet - with a dense luxurious pile and soft sheen. Woven with a resilient yarn giving incredible wear.' The chair has a loose squab feather filled seat. The colour is a beautiful blue/green/grey. The show wood is in very good condition, with a good polish. There is a hairline to one of the roundels, this however is solid. The armchair is very sturdy in structure with no loose joints. Additional dimensions information: The inside seat width is 45cm to 40cm to the back. The seat height is 48cm. A superb Glasgow School Arts And Crafts oak armchair. After a design by George Walton for Liberty & Co. Circa 1895. The chair is almost identical to the George Walton design, but has a variant shaped top to the back. Literature: Daryl Bennett, 'Liberty Furniture 1875-1915'.4 Art Furniture, Page 131, plate 4.91. Sketch illustration of George Walton design. Please see photographs. The seating retains the original webbing and filling and has been padded and re-covered with brown leather and copperised studs. The studs are set how they were originally on the chair. Please refer to the last photograph showing the frame before re-upholstery. They have been slightly aged. The oak has the original patina, which has been waxed. There are some marks around the frame with an indentation to note to the top of one arm. The edges to the legs are knocked with use.
