Rare circa 1830 Chinese Chippendale Fully Restored Brown Leather Armchair

About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely circa 1830 in the manner of Chinese Chippendale fully restored brown leather hand dyed armchair A fantastic looking and well made piece, the chair has been fully restored to include being stripped back to the frame, having the joints checked, its then been rebuilt with minor repairs to the fret work carving and renewed padding, the chair has been finished with vintage plain natural fully aniline leather which has been antiqued brass studded in place using traditional methods, the leather has then been hand dyed this wonder cigar brown color Thomas Chippendale is pretty much the greatest furniture maker in history, his original pieces sell in the mid millions and are highly collectable for those that have the depth of pocket required. For those of us who sadly can’t stretch to the original period pieces we need to shop within the “in the manner of” selection, again period 18th century, not Chippendale made sell in the high hundreds of thousands of pounds to the very low millions, the “affordable” selection is from the Regency and Victorian period onwards which is what this is hence the price Any connoisseur of fine furniture will know exactly what this chair is as soon as they see it, it’s a real statement to have in one’s home and considered a piece of art in its own right. Think of it as the Rembrandt of armchairs! Dimensions: Height 98cm Width 71cm Depth 67cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses. Condition: Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

A very good Chippendale-period mahogany Gainsborough armchair, circa 1760. This is a lovely example of an early-George III Gainsborough library armchair in the sophisticated Chinese taste of the period. With well-executed blind-fret carving to the square legs and arm supports.   Note the unusual treatment of the gently-outswept padded arms. Furthermore there is subtle shaping to the top of the back. The 'H' stretcher with pierced Gothick carving. Professionally upholstered to a high standard and overstuffed in a neutral soft velvet, with float buttons and close nailed. Raised on old brass castors. Lovely, rich, old colour and patina. In excellent condition with a sturdy frame throughout.
