About the Item
Early 19th Century Pair of Empire Dolphins' Heads Fauteuils, Manner of Bellange
A pair of Empire walnut fauteuils or armchairs 'aux Dauphine'' (with dolphins' heads) in the manner of Pierre Bellange (1760-1844). The wooden frame with sabre front legs continuing as arm supports, the back legs raked. The armrests curved and carved with a mythological dolphin’s head at the front and a scale motif at the back. The square back slightly curved, the uprights a continuation of the back legs. The top rail features volutes and guilloche ornament.
Upholstered in an elegant stripped moire fabric in reseda green and rose.
Pierre-Antoine Bellangé (1757–1827) was one of the important French/Paris ménusiers of the early 19th century who specialized in creating elaborate seating. Bellangé held an eminent position among the French representatives of the decorative arts. He gained his master craftsman title on October 24, 1788. Among his work from this time were four chairs in mahogany described as being "of the Gothic type" that he created for Count Esterhazy.
