Gio Ponti rare Settebello Train armchair best italian design

About the Item

In the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s, Italy made a difficult but quick recovery from the horror and destruction of World War II. The conflict had completely devastated a country that was already on its way to becoming a modern nation: high expressions of architecture, design and engineering had already shown the world what Italy was capable of. Now they had to start from scratch. One of the crucial points of the national renaissance was to connect the country from north to south, from east to west: this is where the train comes in. In perfect Italian style, it was not just any train, but one of the most incredible and futuristic trains the world had ever seen. Built in a streamlined, seamless body, with two symmetrical passenger observation decks at each end, a raised control cabin and the highest level of elegance and comfort in every class, the Settebello and Arlecchino trains crisscrossed the country for three decades, becoming a true symbol of the "Boom" and creating indelible memories for every Italian who spotted them on the tracks. The interiors of both trains were taken care of by a team of architects and designers who were among the greatest Italy has ever had: among them, Gio Ponti and Giulio Minoletti were responsible for the furnishing of first and second class. Since the train was designed more as a mobile lounge than a regular train convoy, passengers would sit on comfortable, contemporary chairs: upholstered in blue/green fabric, with brass feet and an ingenious built-in ashtray, the chairs were manufactured by Officine Breda of Milan. The chair, from a Settebello train, was upholstered in a brown fabric; the original blue fabric with blue piping is preserved underneath, but they need to be restored. Extremely rare and with only cosmetic damage, they are in solid structural condition and have incredible potential that can be discovered with the touch of an experienced restorer. Additional images can be provided at the buyer's request;period photos show the chairs in a period photo, aboard the train.

By Gio Ponti, Officine Breda, Giulio Minoletti
    Located in Rivoli, IT
