Marcel Breuer TI-1A Chair / Authentic Bauhaus Chair

About the Item

Sculptural qualities define this object. A vivid dynamic between the different volumes and surfaces, showing different qualities from different angles. Its expressive form offers a complex plasticity shaped by light and shadows. That is a one-of-a-kind piece – unique and outstanding, it holds a museum exhibit quality. An artefact for collectors and connoisseurs. A piece without any compromises. Highly valuable, rarely even offered by auction houses. However, it comes with a price. The chair is designed so it seems like it is defying the force of gravity. It is made out of eighteen wooden battens, which together create a rigid structure, connected with complex joints. It is made out of massive oak wood. Due to patina and aging, the surfaces are stained. The piece is remarkable, as cantilevered frame was used for the first time as a design method. It is visible on the armrests and backrest positions. Unlike the first version which consisted of both square and rectangular slats, this one is even more radical, as all slats have the same dimensions, which improves its dynamic shape. Contrasting and softening the strong, stiff frame, the seat is light and relaxed, as it is made out of woven fabric. This tells a story of collaborations between Breuer and the Bauhaus weaving workshops, led by German textile artist Gunta Stölzl. I think this piece blends well with many interior styles. By itself, this masterpiece is an eye-catcher, enriching each interior. P! Galerie’s selection is mainly focused on design masterpieces between 1918 and 1970. Apart from rare French mid-century modern design artefacts by Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand, our offer includes masterpieces of historic importance and value by Gerrit Rietveld, Lina Bo Bardi, Marcel Breuer, Oscar Niemeyer, or, for example, Eileen Gray. Following all ethical and juridical requirements, all items from our carefully curated collection come with a certificate of authenticity. We try to preserve as much of patina as possible during the process of restoration, as it defines these historic pieces. Not only do we cooperate with museums and offer auction houses our services and expert opinion, we also look forward to welcoming you as a private collector and connoisseur. Literature: Cat.
