Model 113 Armchair in Oak & Cane by Nanna Ditzel for Kolds Savvaerk, c. 1950s

About the Item

This “Model 113” chair, with it's elegant and ergonomic shape, is instantly recognizable as being Danish Mid-Century Modern. As with most of Ditzel’s designs, like her iconic “Egg Chair” (c. 1959), the Model 113 chair is based on a circular shape as shown with the deep curvature of the backrest. This graceful curve is contrasted with the square, tapered shape of the legs and the smooth oak softens this juxtaposition; resulting in a balanced and clean-lined frame. The delicately hand-woven, multi-colored cane seat perfectly offset the deep richness of the solid oak frame. The slight bow of the seat flows with the curves of the frame, making the chair both cohesive and comfortable. This delicate chair, with it's use of premium materials and subtle elegance, showcases all of the best qualities of Danish Mid-Century Modern design. Nanna Ditzel (1923 - 2005) was an icon of post-war Danish design, famous for her forward-thinking approach to shape and innovative use of new materials and techniques. She studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where she studied under Victor Isbrand, as well as fellow icons of Danish Modern Design such as Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, Peter Hvidt and Kaare Klint. Largely forgotten by history during her own lifetime as woman operating in a man's world, Nanna Ditzel's life and prolific body of work has recently undergone a Renaissance of acclaim, admiration and reproduction. Now considered by many to be one of the top 5 Danish Modern designers and this reevaluation of Ditzel's impact on Danish design history is part of a wider reassessment of design and architecture history in recent years, acknowledging the impact of women whose work has historically been overlooked in favor of their male peers. Though she began furniture design at the zenith of the Danish Modern movement it's been argued that Ditzel's work served as a link between the canon of Mid-Century Danish Design and a more contemporary generation of designers in Denmark, including Cecilie Manz and Maria Bruun. In ultra-rare 100% original, vintage condition this 113 chair is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for an authentic, Danish-made Nanna Ditzel chair. Perfect in both home and office spaces this Model 113 chair can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary to Boho Chic and everything in between. With it's intricately sculpted back, hand-woven cane seat and feminine features this extraordinary armchair is as rare as it is aesthetically breathtaking. Make it yours today before it's truly gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 23 in / 58.42 cm Depth: 21 in / 53.34 cm Height: 26.5 in / 67.31 cm Seat Height: 16.5 in / 41.91 cm This iconic Model 113 chair, designed by the revered Nanna Ditzel and produced in Denmark in the mid-1950's, is in 100% original, vintage condition and is as at home in an art museum as it is in a household. The solid oak frame is in excellent shape showing only minor nicks and light scratches (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but showing no gouges, stains or other signs of wear whatsoever and the woodgrains are truly stunning in natural light. It's always our intention to leave authentic pieces in original condition, however we do offer carpentry services and if you'd like this chair refinished please message us prior to checkout to discuss options and pricing. The caning does show some signs of wear such as a few missing strands as well as areas of minor discoloration (all of which can be seen both in the detail photos as well as the natural light video provided). With that said the seat is weight-bearing and structurally sound. We do offer re-caning services, if this options interests you please message us prior to checkout to discuss pricing and lead time. This visually stunning 113 chair is incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for decades more of use. Please view all photos and video for details on this chair's current condition.
