Pair of Aage Herman Olsen “1774” Armchairs for Fritz Hansen, Denmark 1940s

About the Item

The “1774” model also known as “The Lounge Chair” was originally designed by Danish designer Aage Herman Olsen in 1945 and is his most well-known creation. The nickname “The Lounge Chair” might be misleading, as nowadays these types of chairs are hardly referred to as ‘lounge chairs’. However as it suggests, these chairs were once considered so comfortable, that the name simply stuck. Lounge chairs are used for lounging and leisure, not for work or productivity. These chairs were certainly designed and created with comfort in mind; the splayed legs, tilted backs and round, curved armrests, are all an in favour of the sitter’s comfort. At the same time, the functional elements are also visually appealing as it can be expected from Danish design. The backs are composed of thin spindles, and cushions attached to the top rails covering the upper half of the backrests. The design is kept airy and light by balancing out the tapered legs’ thickness having left the the spindles in the lower parts uncovered. The ash wood’s beautiful colour is complemented by the light bouclé upholstery the cushions are covered in. This chair was manufactured by Fritz Hansen, however it is commonly misattributed to the Swedish company, Kocks Snickerifabrik in Trelleborg. The model “1774” is featured in ‘300 Danske Designmøbler’ or ‘300 Danish Design Furniture’ by Per H. Hansen and Klaus Petersen. Fritz Hansen, established in 1872, is perhaps still the most well-known Danish manufacturer to date, and for a good reason. The cabinetmaker company produced many of the most famous chairs of Scandinavian design history. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Alfred Christensen Upholstered Armchair for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1940s
By Alfred Christensen
Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present armchair in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this. Clean and pure lines define this armchair that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this armchair has a beautiful, warm look with rounded edges and an open look. The only ornamentation is the piping cord that runs along the edges of the body. The unique colour of the velour upholstery in combination with the dark, stained beech legs create warm elegance, perfect to bring a modern touch to any space. While Danish designers, including Alfred Christensen, had many principles, above all, all designers...
