About the Item

This elegant pair of Mid-Century Modern armchairs were designed by Edward Wormley for Dunbar Furniture circa 1950s. These stylish chairs feature tapered high backs with a slight curvature on top that are accentuated by an inner seam. The walnut frames are lacquered in black with x-base stretchers to create a dramatic effect. The chairs are newly upholstered in an oatmeal cotton linen weave contrasting nicely with the lacquered wood. The arm height is 24". Edward Wormley was the sole designer for Dunbar Furniture for over 30 years. He appeared in the 1961 Playboy magazine article “Designs for Living” along with designers, George Nelson, Jens Risom, Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia. Edward Wormley is perhaps the least well-known today but was certainly worthy enough to be included in this fine company. This design has also been attributed to the designer Roger Sprunger who designed for Dunbar in the 60s and 70s. The Dunbar maker's mark is still intact.
