18th Century English George III Period Mahogany Armchair with Modern Fabric
Located in Chicago, IL
This is a finely carved 1760 English George III armchair. The George III period was named after the English monarch of the time. It was popular among the elite and mercantile class of people, due to its excellent material and intricate carvings. Due to the multiple King Georges, each George developed its own look. The George III period is also referred to as the Chippendale style. This period was often characterized by drawing on both the Rococo and Gothic styles. Pieces sported curves, arches, Chinese influences, and cabriole legs. This chair has been entirely carved out of mahogany; a premiere wood choice known for its durability, longevity, and rich coloring. The back has an elegant splat, a principal element of eighteenth-century English chairs. Splats are the center support for a chair’s open back and originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...

18th Century Chinese Chippendale Mahogany Gainsborough Library Armchair
Located in Lymington, GB
A good Chippendale-period mahogany Gainsborough library armchair, circa 1760. This is a lovely example of an early-George III Gainsborough armchair in the sophisticated Chinese taste of the period. With well-executed blind-fret carving to the square legs and arm supports. Note the unusual treatment of the gently-outswept padded arms. Furthermore there is subtle shaping to the top of the back. The 'H' stretcher with pierced Gothick (or 'Gothic') carving. Professionally upholstered to a high standard and overstuffed in a neutral soft velvet, with float buttons and close nailed. Raised on old brass castors. Lovely, rich, old colour and patina. In excellent condition with a sturdy frame throughout. These Georgian library armchairs are sometimes also known as Martha Washington chairs...

18th Century, Large Italian Louis XV Carved Giltwood Armchair
Located in IT
18th Century, Italian Louis XV Carved Giltwood Armchair Measurements: cm H 108 x W 73 x D 77, seat H 46 x D 51 x W 61 The splendid large armchair, in finely carved and gilded wood, was made in Genoa, in the Louis XV period, mid-18th century. The pentagonal back has a wavy and curvilinear profile, and is decorated with carvings with phytomorphic and rocaille elements. The armrests, slightly moved and decorated with carved leaves, end with a volute and from this fit the seat. The band under sitting is moved and decorated with rocaille elements, as well as the legs, arched, and curly feet. On the back, a repainting of the ochre tint was done. The back and seat are padded and lined in red velvet with fine ochre and grey decorations. The type of carving accords refinement and gracefulness to the armchair. The shaped backrest, the wavy armrests and the curved legs give elegance and charm to this seat, easily inserted in any furnishing context, both marked by modern and antique taste...

Pair of 18th Century Chippendale Mahogany Library Armchairs
Located in London, GB
An important pair of mid-18th century Chippendale period mahogany Library Armchairs, having unusual carved and scrolled cartouche-shaped backs, with scroll moulded set-back arms. The Chairs having stuffover seats with gadrooned borders, supported on blind fret carved cabriole legs with scrolled toes. For similar examples see Chippendale's Director, 'French Chairs' Plate XXI Further information: Similar examples of our Library Armchairs can be found in the third edition of Thomas Chippendale book Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director (1762). The pair resembles the right chair design in Plate XXI, catalogued by Chippendale as “French Chairs”. He described in his book that this model “may be executed to advantage, some of them are intended to be open below at the back: which makes them very light without having a bad effect.’ His design illustrates his familiarity with the fashionable French Rococo style represented by the curvilinear form of the chair and scrolled feet. The carved surface decoration on our Chairs is much less elaborate than that on the published design and is more reminiscent of the work of Robert Manwaring...
