About the Item

Pierre Chapo, Pair of Armchairs Model 'S10' Elm, leather and canvas France 1960s This pair of 'S10' armchairs, crafted from elm, leather and canvas, dates back to France, circa 1960s. They are in their original shape with a rich patina, representing an early edition made using Chapo's traditional craft methods. The chairs feature solid elmwood, canvas and cognac saddle leather, with the aging of the leather and canvas adding a sculptural quality. The chairs follow Chapo's 48 x 72 assembly principle and can be fully dismantled, showcasing a complex assembly while maintaining a modest aesthetic. The structure relies on the tension of the orginal canvas seats to hold everything in place, with the cognac leather exhibiting an expressive patina. Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) was trained as an architect in Paris and later co-founded Société Chapo in 1957, a gallery and workshop where he showcased his designs and those of others. His work, influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, Corbusier, and Bauhaus, emphasized the principles of 'material, form, and function.' He preferred elmwood and measured his furniture using the golden ratio. Chapo continued to design until his passing in 1987.
