Mid-Century Modern Armchairs in Hardwood & White Leather Joaquim Tenreiro Brazil
Located in New York, NY
Available now, this beautiful pair of Brazilian Modern armchairs are made of ebonized Pau Marfim hardwood & white leather in buttone style. The structure is composed of curved arms & feet, and were designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in the 1940’s. The wood joints are composed of delicate wood pins in Pau Marfim also, which were typically used by the artist at the time. Sold as set of two. For the restoration process, both armchairs where dissembled to understand their condition and to restore them following Tenreiro’s technique. This is shown in the last 3 images. The set comes from a private residence in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. This mid-century modern pair would look incredible in any modern, mid-century modern, boho chic or contemporary environment. Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) was among the leading furniture designers and visual artists in mid-20th century Brazil. Tenreiro was born in Melo, Gouveia Municipality, Portugal into a family of woodworkers and carpenters. In the late 1920s, he emigrated to Rio de Janeiro and began working for the firm of Laubisch & Hirth. In the early 1940s, Tenreiro was among the first designers in the Brazilian furniture industry to adopt a European modernist vernacular. His initial efforts, including the 1942 "Poltrona Leve," met with considerable success, and in 1943 he established his own firm with factories in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. However, it was not until the 1950s that he began to be recognized as a master furniture designer in Brazil. His design philosophy found a great response with architects who supported modernism. A forerunner in the use of rediscovered raw materials (like cane and jacaranda -Brazilian Roswood) as well as the creator of a new formal language in 20th-century Brazilian furniture design, he drew on the lessons of past furniture-making as a vital source, not only in the mastery of technical and constructive solutions but also in the aesthetic experience, craftsmanship, and the cultural meaning of his production. As a result, his exquisitely crafted pieces evoke a refined coexistence of traditional values and modern aesthetics, firmly bound to the Brazilian cultural milieu. Literature: • Arquitetura e Decoracao, no. 12, Jul-Aug 1955 • Tenreiro book...

Pair of Louis XVI French Aubusson Tapestry Fruitwood Armchairs was hand-crafted from solid apple wood in one of the more intriguing interpretations of the Louis XVI style. This pair of armchairs retain the light, warm tones of the wood, hand-carved with egg & dart, laurels, and acanthus motifs. The tapered and fluted legs contrast with the scrolled armrest supports. Rosettes adorn the junctures of the legs at the frames, and create a raised panel at the center of the apron in front. The piece de...

Brazilian Modern “Jangada” Armchair & Stool in Hardwood & Leather, Jean Gillon
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Brazilian Modern “Jangada” lounge chair with stool in hardwood & leather by Jean Gillon designed in the 1960s is absolutely gorgeous! The chair's name, "Jangada," was named after the small rustic fishing boats used by fishermen along the northern coast of Brazil. The “purplish” tone of the wood chair contrasts nicely with the iconic caramel leather upholstery, adding to its luxurious and elegant appearance. The upholstery took three months to make and was done by some of the best upholsters in Rio de Janeiro following Gillon’s upholstery methodology (as is showcased in the vintage publications attached). Remains of the manufacturing seal can be seen in the wood base. The nets are new. Owning a "Jangada '' lounge chair is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This chair is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. Beyond its physical beauty and unique design, the "Jangada" lounge chair also embodies the Brazilian spirit, an specific aspect of Brazilian Modernism that can be seen in other brazilian icons like Sergio Rodrigues, the Tres Pies chair of Joaquim Tenreiro or the Canoa sofa of Liceu de Artes e Oficios. The gorgeous set is showcased in our showroom next to a Novo Rumo rosewood credenza, a bar cart designed by Geraldo de Barros and the convo looks nothing less than spectacular Size: H32.5, W36, D41.5, SH15.5 (in) H82.5, W91.4, D105.4, SH39.4 (cm) Jean Gillon is a Brazilian furniture designer born in Romania in 1919. Midcentury Armchairs MP-13 by Percival Lafer in Hardwood & Beige Leather, Brazil
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Brazilian armchair set, model MP-13, designed by Percival Lafer in Hardwood and Beige Italian leather, 1960s is nothing less than fabulous! The super comfy armchairs feature a Brazilian rosewood (known as Jacaranda) base with four legs. The structure is upholstered in Italian Beige leather and has rosewood, steel finishes and leather buttons. The loose cushions around the arms give the piece a super inviting look. The entire MP-13 set, two armchairs and sofa, is showcased in our gallery next to a Giuseppe Scapinelli coffee table looking simply spectacular (image). Renovation for the entire set took almost 5 months. While the piece was intact from a structure point of view, we disassembled the pieces and strengthened the wood structure. In parallel, the metal was refinished removing all the rust. Then, the upholsterer started the hand stitching process of the italian leather, resulting in what you’re seeing in the pictures. This set would look wonderful in any Mid-Century Modern, modern or contemporary environment. Literature: Percival Lafer book & Vintage Publications...
