Barrel Chair by Frank Lloyd Wright for Cassina

About the Item

The “Barrel Chair”or “Taliesen Barrel Chair” by Frank Lloyd Wright was designed in 1937 after a design from 1904. It was designed Herbert Johnson’s house. It earns its name from the city Taliesin, Wisconsin where the famous Taliesin III House stands today. This piece is an early re-edition produced by Cassina in Italy. The body of the piece is made from Cherry wood, with beautiful graining and warm honey colour. The seat is covered in a red woven fabric, based on the original upholstery of the piece. This classic piece epitomises the Arts and Crafts sensibility of modest wooden furniture, highly crafted and well made, recalling designs from early proponents such as Gustav Stickley or William Morris. Simple in form, yet sophisticated in its construction, this barrel-shaped armchair is composed of 37 parts, each fitting into the other with pinpoint precision. The base and the chair back are constructed from three pieces of solid wood, bent at a different angles. Each of the three pieces is then cut in two to counterbalance the tensions created during the steam-bending and the drying processes. The two parts are then placed back-to-back and glued together. The joints are all carved directly into the wood, all the details are hand-finished.
