Mario Botta, Silver Shogun Wall Light Sconce by Artemide, Italy

About the Item

Designed by architect and idustrial designer Mario Botta and produced by Artemide Italy, this model of Shogun Parete wall lamp or sconce was produced in silver, a very rare colour way. Ordinarily sold in white, the silver model was produced in limited quantities and is rarely seen. Mario Botta is a Swiss architect and designer, identified by his strong use of geometric forms. Working from the 1960's, on a variety of building, from houses to large scale public buildings, Botta is now most well known for his furniture and lighting designs. Pieces such as the Seconda, Quinta and Quarta chairs, like mini buildings, utilise metal bar and perforated sheet metal, combined in graphic and striking compositions. Feeling light and spacious, the pieces balance negative and positive space, with strong, sharp forms feeling architectural, whilst the perforations allow light to stream through creating wonderful shadows, softening the lines and adding a poetic quality. These same ideas of geometry, curves and volumes are utilised in his lighting pieces, using the the same materials to great effect. Based on the form of a samurai’s visor, curved, bent sheets of perforated metal are layered and individually articulated, which allow the shades to be rotated at whim. The result is a piece with astonishing shadows, that one can easily manipulate by simpling moving the layers. This is a piece of kinetic geometric art for the wall. The Shogun wall lamp is out of production. Artemide is an Italian manufacturer founded by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza in 1960. Materials: enameled steel, aluminium and plastics.
