About the Item

Architect, sculptor, painter, and art historian Mathias Goeritz (Gdansk, Poland, 1915-Mexico City, 1990) moved to Mexico in 1949. He was commissioned to design the Experimental Museum El Eco, one of kind art forum and venue in the heart of Mexico City, which he considered as the embodiment of his manifesto on “emotional architecture”. Mathias Goeritz designed this chair in 1952 as part of the Eco experience where plastic or funcional integrations were not understood as a program but rather as the intrinsic part of an architectural space thought of as a large sculptural element or total work of art. "The idea of EL ECO was born from the disinterested enthusiasm of some men who wanted to give Mexico the first “experimental museum” open to the artistic concerns of the current world" (extract Emotional Architecture Manifesto, Mathias Goeritz, 1953) Funcional, comfortable and sculptural the chair is reedited by Clasicos Mexicos as a rare furniture legacy of one of the most significant actor in post-war modernist art and design in Latin America. Mathias Goertiz legacy also includes the famous Torres de Satélite (Satellite City Towers) co-authored with Luis Barragán in 1958. He conceived La Ruta de la Amistad (Route of Friendship), a sculptural corridor created by 19 artists from 17 countries as part of the public art project of the 1968 Olympic Games.
