One Postmodern Mastrangelo Museum Chair designed by Alessandro Mendini 1986

About the Item

Postmodern Museum chair by Alessandro Mendini, Sedile del'Museo Bagatti Valsecchi` - also known as the" Museum Chair ", designed by Alessandro Mendini in 1996. Price per chair, two chairs available. The chair is signed on the front of the backrest - a second chair available is signed on it´s back. Only very few samples of the chair were produced. Very good vintage condition with slight signs of wear on seat. Signature partially faded. Alessandro Mendini artistic attitude to design objects questions the meaning of furniture itself. The objects cab be understood as a humorous commentary on furniture and further on design history. The chairs backrest shows an abstracted portrait, probably of his partner, Anna Gili, incorporated as a muse. Underneath the relief of two fishes can be found, with shimmering eyes with a sort of pearl inlay. Withdrawing furniture from their actual everyday use they too become an icon and therefore an object of fine art rather than a mere useful thing. Mendini joyfully plays with furniture‘s role in the interior & you can be sure: Mendini’s objects don’t quite fit the habits we associate them with. Mendini’s attitude towards design certainly was radical, also his objects seem not to on first impression.

  • Magis Proust LowChair in Multicolour by Alessandro Mendini
    By Magis, Alessandro Mendini
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
“I think many people will already know my “Proust armchair”. It is a romantic, baroque chair, on which an endless number of multi-coloured dots are hand-paint- ed using the pointillism technique. These dots cover the whole armchair, both the fabric and the wooden decorations. It’ s a re-design work. It is, in fact, a combination of a mock-antique armchair with a detail from a painting of a garden by French artist Signac. From 1978 onwards, the “Proust armchair” was produced in many versions, using different colours, ma- terials and dimensions, and was even made of ceramics and bronze. It travelled all around the world and was hosted in many museums. But now some truly revolutionary news, as a paradox comes true: the “Proust armchair” has now been transformed into an industrial rotational-moulded piece. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you “ Magis Proust...
