Important Neopolitan Empire Giltwood Fauteuil, Italy, circa 1810
Located in Kinderhook, NY
An important Italian giltwood fauteuil of exceptional design and exquisite detail crafted in Naples and attributed to Pietro Galizia, circa 1810, having fish-scale crest-rail and upholstered back with carved honey-suckle and flower border joining padded arms with Egyptian sphinx-head terminals above arm supports and front apron with same honey-suckle and flower carvings around upholstered seat with fluted side-rails and front legs joined by roundel centered corner blocks all with original gilding. The design of this chair relates to examples in the Royal Palace at Caserta made by Pietro Galizia for the Bourbon kings and exemplifies the early Empire period enthusiasm for all things 'Egyptian' after Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798. Chairs of related design were illustrated in engravings by Pietro Ruga and Lorenzo Roccheggiani in 'Models for Furnishings' in 'Invenzioni diverse di mobili ed utensili sacri e profani' published 1811. Literature: Italian Empire Furniture...
