About the Item

Chair number 29 "Sedia stridente ai bordi del suo essere" is part of the series "100 Sedie in una Notte" designed by Paolo Pallucco and produced by Galleria d'Arte Contemporanea Emilio Mazzoli in Modena, Italy 1990. Only four items of each design were produced over the years, each signed and numbered by Pallucco. Considered today one of the most radical designers of the 1980s, Paolo Palluco has successfully merged a nostalgic modernist sensibility with a postmodernist attitude. Inspired by a poem by German writer Rainer Maria Rilke, in which the main character is facing his last night on earth, Paolo Pallucco envisioned himself spending his last night drawing 100 chairs, which resulted in the hybrid project 100 Sedie in una Notte. Each chair has a playful name, given by art critic Achile Bonito Oliva. Our lot of chairs originates from the gallery of Emilio Mazzoli, who is well known for having exhibited for the first time in Europe, in 1982, a very young and unknown Jean Michel Basquiat. Mazzoli and Bonito Oliva were the trailblazers who ignited the Transavanguardia in the late ‘70s, the Italian movement part of the international phenomenon of a revival of expressionist painting, by exhibiting the work of Enzo Cucchi and Dandro Chia. They also collaborated regularly with Gino De Dominicis, Mario Schifano and Alighiero Boetti, three of the most important Italian artists of the end of the millennium. About the designer: Considered today one of the design icons of the 1980s, Paolo Palluco has worked in his short-spanned career of roughly one decade with important names from the art world, who have recognised his genius from the very beginning. Among them are photographer Peter Lindbergh and the Japanese legend Rei Kawakubo, whom he had a fruitful collaboration with as a designer and editor. He’s also credited, together with his long-time partner and collaborator, Mireille Rivier for being one of the pioneers of what is now the established Fuori Salone, after staging two consecutive shows, in 1988 and 1989, at the Mattatoio, an abandoned slaughterhouse in Milan. Pallucco's designs are often contaminated by his close proximity to the art world and have a strong experimental character, doubled by explorations of the aesthetic potential of industrial materials such as metal mesh and revivals of ancient techniques such as glass blowing in cages.
