About the Item

Fabulous set of chairs by renowned designer Antoni de Moragas, made of tubular iron and molded wood. Winners of the first prize in the furniture contest Prodignification of the popular home, 1954, FAD, and National Housing Institute. The motto of the American designers Charles and Ray Eames "get the most of the best for the greatest number of people for the least" could also be that of the Catalan architect Antoni de Moragas. A pioneer of design in our country, Moragas created a series of products throughout his professional career, always related to his buildings or daily chores, imbued with that "r" that he pursued so much: restoration, renovation, revolution " It was with this criterion that in 1954 he designed a set of furniture that clearly exemplified what Moragas considered design. Thus, it reveals the belief that the shape of the product must not only be functional, but must also dignify and please. Moragas's intention was to reach what he called "the humanization of the standard." This chair exists in the collection of the Barcelona Design Museum. As in other designs by the author, it is a piece where the materials are mixed (iron tube for the structure and molded wood for the seat and backrest) and where both the structure and the construction systems remain visible, because for Moragas are a communication tool and therefore he considers that they should not be hidden. The chair soon became independent from the rest of the group and Moragas placed it in some of his buildings, as well as being included in the second exhibition organized by the Ram Group under the title "Industry and Architecture" which was held at the Layetana galleries in Barcelona in 1954. Products from 34 firms of builders and manufacturers were presented in order to exhibit objects and materials necessary for the new architecture promoted by the group and that a sense of appropriation could not be carried out with these components. In 1961, with the collaboration of Rafael Marquina, Moragas, in accordance with his spirit of research in the creation of objects of serial production and popular character, designed a new chair (MADB135.397) based on it.
