About the Item
The Spanish Chair is a handcrafted piece made from Oregon pine using traditional tools, techniques, and joinery. Finished with natural oil, it highlights the simplicity and durability of its materials.
This design is inspired by the historic Fraile chair, a hallmark of the Spanish Renaissance. Known for its modest, functional aesthetic, the Fraile chair features a wide seat and straight arms, embodying the monastic ideals of practicality and simplicity. Robust stretchers connect the legs, enhancing stability and contributing to its timeless appeal.
Blending this historical foundation with Bauhaus and Nordic design elements, the Spanish Chair incorporates a contemporary touch. The rational minimalism of Bauhaus, focused on industrial production and efficiency, complements traditional craftsmanship, creating a unique harmony between past and present. This combination of styles makes the Spanish Chair both rooted in tradition and relevant to modern sensibilities, offering a design that is thoughtful, functional, and enduring.

Frank Buschmann (1969-Pinetown, South Africa), artist / craftsman /designer .
Trained as a industrial designer and cabinetmaker. Of German origin, currently living in Galicia, Spain. He spent his childhood in South Africa and Nigeria, his adolescence and education in Germany, where he studied cabinetmaking at the Karlsruhe School of Crafts. In the Netherlands he studied Industrial Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where he has been later teaching in the Master "man and humanity". Frank argues that the mastery of a trade is a carrier of tools exemplary for the sustainability of the future. Being a master of a trade is not reduced to the virtuosity of handling some techniques but also supposes a long learning to recognize and cultivate specific attitudes and values. With this approach, Frank intends to recover and maintain the knowledge and practice, not only of the traditional techniques and processes of cabinetmaking, but also its values: patience, intuition and the search for perfection. The virtuous management of techniques goes through the learning of values and attitudes and, all of them, he considers, are universal tools needed to deal with the complexity of the future.
