About the Item

Pair of vintage Josef Hoffman chairs originally designed for the Fledermaus Cabaret in Vienna in the secessionist style. Hoffman designed several different chairs for the Fledermaus in 1906 and the originals were built by JJKohn (and appeared in their catalogs long after) and then manufactured by Mundas in Vienna. Eventually Thonet in NYC started making and selling the chairs. This pair of chairs appears to be all original. They have the tags on the bottom from Thonet. (Thonet's factory in the US was in York, PA). The original black lacquer has some loss (see close ups) and one of the chairs seats shows some separation (see close up). The chairs are structurally very solid. We could send the chairs out for a fresh coat of lacquer and to be reupholstered (if that's what the buyer preferred) for a fee. We decided to list them as-is because they are in original condition and with some loss, still beautiful. Dimensions: 22" W (widest point is at the arms) x 16.75"D x 30"H (@ arms) seat width = 16.25" and seat height = 18" Josef Hoffman (1870 - 1956) was a prolific designer of architecture, furniture, utensils, clothing, posters, textiles and wallpaper. Around 1900 he developed his geometrically refined signature style - exemplified here in one of his designs for the Fledermaus.
