About the Item

Set of four ‘Champagne’ chairs in very good condition. These chairs were designed by Estelle & Erwin Laverne in 1957 They were produced the French company Formes Nouvelles The 'Champagne Chair’ was part of the ‚invisibles‘ group, a collection of organically formed acrylic seatings. The look-through effect of this innovative material helped them to develop furniture that didn’t obstruct the space of a modern interior. The design of these chairs was well ahead of their time. With it’s transparent lucite seat shell and Aluminium base the Champagner chair offers a highly esthetic elegance and comfort. The chairs have a revolving swivel base that automatically returns to its center position. On the underside of the base the chairs are marked ‘Champagne Chair Laverne Formes Nouvelles" The cushions are upholstered with a beautiful natural colored suede. The chairs are fully restored: - Bases professionally polished - Lucite shells professionally polished - Seat cushions professionally reupholstered with a beautiful natural suede Erwine and Estelle Laverne were a husband-and-wife design team known for their innovative furniture designs in the mid-20th century. They worked together from the 1940s to the 1960s, and their work is characterized by its clean lines, sculptural forms, and use of new materials. Erwine Laverne was born in 1909 in Austria and trained as an architect in Europe. Estelle Laverne was born in 1917 in New York City and studied at the Art Students League. The couple met in New York in the 1930s and began working together in the 1940s. The Lavernes' furniture designs were often made from materials such as fiberglass, aluminum, and lucite, which were relatively new and unusual at the time. Their designs were functional and practical, but also had a sculptural quality that made them stand out. The Lavernes' work was recognized with numerous awards, including the Museum of Modern Art's Good Design Award in 1950 and 1951. Their designs continue to be celebrated for their innovative use of materials and sculptural forms, and their work is represented in many museum collections around the world.
