Pair of "Mix" Chairs in Nigerian Goatskin with Brass Nailheads by Kaare Klint

About

Pair of "Mix" Chairs in Nigerian Goatskin with Brass Nailheads by Kaare Klint. About the chair. Klint named the Mix chair on a sketch, where he described it as "a mixture of Kindt and Klint". In doing so he credited his pupil at the Academy, Edvard Kindt-Larsen with his collaboration on the chair. Kindt-Larsen, who graduated from the Academy in 1927, had worked on the chair as a school project while he was a pupil. The first four chairs were made circa 1930 by the cabinetmaker N.C. Jensen Kjær and were in the possession of Kindt-Larsen during his lifetime. The Mix chair was made from 1931 by Rud Rasmussens Snedkerier as model number 4396, but it was only first exhibited when it was shown at the 1937 Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at the Danish Museum of Art and Design. The subtle play of curvature in the piece is its hallmark: convex at top, concave in the seat, with a constant rolling line from one front leg to the top and down to the other leg. The chair was originally produced in oak with Nigerian goatskin upholstery and brass fittings. Rud Rasmussens began to make frames in Cuban mahogany as well as other woods, and with a variety of upholsteries, secured either with brass fittings or welted edges.
