About the Item
A rare collectors pair of 'Ribbon' lounge chairs by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi, designed in 1961 and produced by Fiarm - Elco in Sorzé (Venice) Italy, in 1969.
Also known as the 'Nastro' chairs, these iconic model CL-9 'Ribbon' armchairs feature a striking design with a continuous strip of GRP (fiberglass reinforced with resin), elegantly molded into a ribbon-like form. Mounted on a chrome/steel tubular frame with large elongated rubber shock mounts, the chairs exhibit a cantilevered construction that provides a subtle spring, enhancing comfort and style.
A rare variant of the commonly found Ribbon chairs, this pair has buttons for seat and back cushions to be secured adding additional comfort to this slick design. No cushions accompany this pair of chairs but can be added with fabric or leather of your choice.
Ideal for enthusiasts of 1960s and 1970s Space Age design, these 'Ribbon' chairs not only embody sophisticated Italian design but also represent a significant piece of 20th century modern design history.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER:
Cesare Leonardi (Modena, 1935 - 2021) and Franca Stagi (1937 - 2008) were influential Italian architects and designers known for their pioneering work in modernist architecture, furniture design, and urban planning.
Leonardi, a graduate of the University of Florence, excelled in fiberglass furniture and also pursued photography, sculpture, and painting. Stagi, trained at Milan Polytechnic, specialized in urban planning and industrial design.
They co-founded their studio in Modena in 1963, gaining acclaim for innovative fiberglass designs like the Nastro (Ribbon) and Dondolo seating, now in prestigious museum collections worldwide. Their practice from 1970 to 1980 focused on architecture, parks, and public structures that harmonized with nature.
After their studio disbanded, Leonardi continued with modular furniture and urban planning innovations, including the Bosco Albergati park (1988). Stagi focused on public architecture restoration in Modena.
In 2019, the Cartier Foundation in Paris honored their influential tree study. Their work is showcased in MoMA, New York, the V&A, London, and the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein.
The Archivio Architetto Cesare Leonardi (established 2010) and Archivio di Franca Stagi (organized at Luigi Poletti Civic Art Library, Modena, 2011) preserve their impactful legacies.

Pair of Club Chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy, c 1970, Signed
By Claudio Salocchi, Sormani
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This newly reupholstered pair of club chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, circa 1970s, features graceful chrome frames with nubby white bouclé fabric. Signed with 1960s/ 1970s Sormani label as shown in photo gallery.
*Note, we have the matching sofa available in another listing.
The graceful frames share a design quality with Cassina's LC2 / LC3 design by Le Corbusier, as they are 'buckets of cushions' in similar fashion and comfort. However these Sormani lounge chairs feature some unique subtle details, such as the slight "twist" in the rear legs (see photos).
Signed with a Sormani label, this particular rare design is attributed to Claudio Salocchi. While there were several other famous designers who created works for Sormani in this time period, the style best matches Salocchi's work. For collectors looking for something unique and rare within a collection of 1960s/ 1970s Italian designs, this pair of easy chairs are an amazing opportunity.
These Cassina LC2 / LC3 style chairs...

PLR1 Luar lounge chair by Ross Littell for ICF De Padova Italy 1960s, set of 2
By Ross Littell
Located in Sas van Gent, NL
Ross F. Littell (July 14, 1924 – April 17, 2000) was an American textile and furniture designer known for his practical, innovative, and minimalist style as part of the good design movement of the 1950s. His three-legged T-chair, designed in 1952 with William Katavolos and Douglas Kelley, is part of several permanent museum collections. Littell, born and raised in Los Angeles, attended the Art Center School in Los Angeles and finished his education with honour in 1946. In 1947, he was awarded a scholarship to study in Italy. It was during these period that Littell became increasingly interested in architecture and design. In 1949 Littell formed a partnership with William Katavolos and Douglas Kelley. During their six-year partnership, they designed furniture, along with textiles and dinnerware, for Laverne Originals in New York, using materials such as leather, glass, chrome, and marble.
In a later stage Littell did work autonomously as well for several furniture companies, mostly for Knoll International and Herman Miller. An interesting fact is that the PLR1 lounge chair, designed in 1965, was actually designed for Herman Miller. ICF, an Italian manufacturer from Milan, produced a lot of Herman Miller designs for the Italian market in license, and started producing the PLR1 as well for the Italian market but only for the De Padova shop, a luxury chain of design furniture shops in Italy with a strong emphasis on Scandinavian design. Hence, the PLR1 has therefore a very interesting history.
Rendered in slick chromed steel and beige fabric straps, the chair is a particularly stylish take on a slipper chair with a low, angled seat and curvy frame extending into two trestle legs that extend far out horizontally. The four protective feet are deliberately blocky plastic cubes...
