William Westenhaver for WITCO Pair of Geometric Cedar Lounge Chairs

About the Item

Brutalism gets an idiosyncratic accompaniment from Pop Primitivism with these rough-hewn, swiveling, chairs. Artist William Westenhaver was co-founder of the WITCO furnishings firm located on the west of the USA, which pioneered designs incorporating motifs from Pacific Island culture. In fact, he was once dubbed “the Titan of Tiki.” Today’s resurgence of interest in this once-popular style may be retrospectively realizing the aspects it shares with mainstream Brutalism. Here, abstract geometric forms in a special finish are carved from Pacific Northwest cedar to stand out from the darker, bold wood grain. These pieces have been archivally reupholstered in Dedar fabric.

Hand Carved High Back Witco Tiki Throne King Chairs in Faux Leopard Fur
By William Westenhaver / Witco, Witco
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Take a walk on the wild side, or maybe just have a seat there with scepter in hand. Each anthropomorphic gorilla-arm-chair has been recovered in high-quality, cruelty free, faux-fur that very much resembles the look and feel of leopard fur. Each high back is adorned with two hand-carved conquistador heads donning their iconic helmets. These highly collectible and hard-to-find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture. This project was a complete tear-down and rebuild. Every section was unbolted and individually restored. This sinuous, dark cedar has been painstakingly detailed by our in-house restoration team to both preserve the patina and address any imperfections in the wood. Lightly recolored and clear-coated to accentuate and preserve the character. The seats and backs were professionally reupholstered, and the results speak for themselves. We're more than certain these will exceed expectations. Robert Post Junior and Artist William Westenhaver Created Witco...
