New Stock ✅ Robin Day for Hille “Form Group” Modular Sectional Sofa Mid Century Vintage Retro MCM A rare, reupholstered and restored 7 seater modular group section and coffee table set designed by Robin Day for Hille in the 1960s. Robin Day is one of the most significant British designers of the 20th century. Since winning first prize in the Storage Section of the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design (organised by MOMA in 1948), Day built a legacy of innovation and forward focused design. As a result of winning the MOMA award, Robin Day was sought out by the cabinet-making firm of S.Hille & Co, and began a partnership that flourished over the ensuing decades. Hille company had specialized in reproduction furniture but with the ambitious young designer on board, Hille completely changed direction and embraced modern design. Designed in 1960, the “Form Group” carried through theories on flexibility and modular design that Robin Day had forged with his storage systems in the previous decade. Using square-section tubular steel frames as a platform, a range of seat units, tables or storage units could be inserted to meet the requirements of the user. The system allowed for a wide range of configurations and offered customers great flexibility. The opportunity to adopt corner arrangements was a highly modern way of designing rooms and spaces. The design was visually lightweight and the rectilinear form expressed international modernism. The “Form Group” was recognised with a Council of Industrial Design Award in 1961. This set has its original Pirelli rubber webbing and restored teak seating frames and has been reupholstered in a beautiful light cream fabric. The group includes 7 sections in the following figuration:- 3 Seater Section - 215cm, long 71cm depth 2 Seater Section - 142cm, long 71cm depth 2 seater Section - 142cm, long 71cm depth 6 seat frames 75cm high, 40cm seat height 1 black coffee table insert 2 removable armrests The whole set is interchangeable and can be configured to suit your personal needs. We also have a Robin Day for Hille Chevron chair and sofa bed available. All in the same fabric to make a complete matching set.
