18th Century Swedish Rococo Period Settee or Sofa Bench in Original Paint

About the Item

A richly carved, 18th century Swedish sofa bench from the Rococo period, newly upholstered linen. This beautiful settee has been hand-scraped back to reveal the original paint and traces of natural wood. There are intricately carved Rococo details: Flowing curves, cabriole legs, and shell motif. The Rococo period followed the Baroque period and is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement. The period began in the 1720's and continued through 1770. Rococo takes its name from the French word 'rocaille,' which means rock or broken shell. This period was characterized by elaborately carved, smaller and more functional pieces, the cabriole leg, and cherub, fruit, shell, flower, and scroll motifs.
