About the Item

Cuban-born Clara Porset was a pioneer for modern design in Mexico. Having studied architecture in New York and then Paris, she finally settled in Mexico devoting her life to championing her mutually enriching vision of modernity and tradition. A fierce proponent of historical craft traditions, Clara Porset created wholly contemporary versions of the classic Mexican vernacular forms including the colonial butaque chair, itself a hybrid of Spanish and pre-Colombian archetypes. Despite others laying claim to its reinterpretations, Porset’s design for architect Luis Barragan’s houses are by far the most well-known and are what Luteca bases its pieces on. Working directly with UNAM (The National Autonomous University of Mexico) that holds the legacy to Clara Porset's archives, our design team meticulously studied the construction of original pieces to match her various forms and adaptations to offer truly unique pieces of iconic Mexican design.

Contemporary Tropical Chair with Hand-Woven Seat and Back in Caribbean Walnut
By Ania Wolowska
Located in PARQUE INDUSTRIAL OTHON P BLANCO, Quintana Roo
The chair features a simple and lightweight structure. Its clean lines, with smooth, rounded edges, complement the meticulous handcrafted weaving. Made by a family of artisans from Bacalar, the weaving uses the "ojo de perdiz" technique with cotton or nylon thread. The design of this chair is inspired by the wicker rocking chairs and armchairs traditionally made in Yucatán. Today, this tradition is fading, along with the art of hand-weaving chairs. Therefore, the intention behind the Cocom Collection is to preserve and revive this legacy. The Cocom Collection merges tradition and modernity, elevating craftsmanship with exceptional attention to detail. It employs various endemic tropical wood from southern Mexico, giving each piece a vibrant tropical personality. The chairs, armchairs, and rockers are available in a variety of weaving colors. _ design: Ania Wolowska finish: wax weaving: cotton or nylon available in: Caribbean Walnut...
