About the Item

This is an old Japanese primitive-style side chair, crafted sometime between the 1940s and 1960s in the Showa period. Even after many decades, it still radiates a strong, commanding presence. The chair is made from tochi wood (Japanese horse chestnut), a native species valued for its rare combination of sturdiness and subtle flexibility. Its form preserves the natural contours of the tree with only the most minimal handwork, creating a captivating harmony between nature and human craftsmanship. The organic curves, reminiscent of branches and trunks, seem to convey the living energy of the wood itself. Over time, the surface has matured into a gentle greyish tone, adding a profound sense of character. Structurally sound with no wobble, it is well-suited not only for everyday seating but also as a display stand for a treasured object in a gallery or living room. It brings natural depth to any space and lends a quiet yet striking presence to interior décor. The weathered texture and subtle marks of age embody the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in the passage of time and the patina it creates. Simple yet timeless, this piece remains captivating across generations. Weight: 12.5 kg __________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
