Pair of Late 18th Century French Directoire Period Painted Side Chairs

About the Item

This pair of late eighteenth century French Directoire period painted side chairs features its original patina. Their curved seat backs are detailed with a hand carved laurels at the top and a scrolling pattern in the center with a palmette. A Greek key pattern around the apron and rosettes inset into lozenges finish the look. The front legs are detailed with a striated pattern around the top and the rear legs curve gently outward "en sabres", which in English translates to "like sabers." The seats are upholstered in a striped green and blue fabric that complements the vestiges of varied shades of paint. c. 1790.
