Case Sofa
American furniture designer Milo Baughman (1923–2003) conceived the Case sofa sometime during the 1960s, when designers and manufacturers were still experimenting with technologies and materials that had been developed during World War II. From the aircraft industry, molded plastics and aluminum became viable new options, while the Chrysler Corporation introduced spot-welding techniques for joining wood to rubber, metal and plastic. Baughman, who was born in Goodland, Kansas, but spent his formative years in Long Beach, California — which may have informed his laid-back sensibility — worked with dozens of manufacturers. The interior designer and furniture maker’s collaborations include a decades-long association with Thayer Coggin, which produced this classic modernist design.
With its wood veneer, wool-flannel upholstery and straight metal legs, the Case sofa exudes a certain bygone masculinity that is frequently referenced as a defining characteristic of postwar culture. Fittingly, Baughman's seating — or his influence, at the very least — can be found in more than one room on the award-winning television series Mad Men, thanks to set decorators Claudette Didul and Amy Wells. The designer's work inspired the furniture created for the pristine office of Don Draper, the show’s erratic, arrogant male protagonist. Yet Baughman’s Case sofa is notable for more than its dashing good looks. Its hefty proportions and straightforward lines speak to the era’s growing prevalence of mass fabrication. That’s not to say the sofa isn’t well crafted. It simply embodies the advent of mass-market furniture as well as a new kind of status symbol.
Milo Baughman
Milo Baughman was one of the most agile and adept modern American furniture designers of the late 20th century. A prolific lecturer and writer on the benefits of good design — he taught for years at Brigham Young University — Baughman (whose often-scrambled surname is pronounced BAWF-man) focused almost exclusively on residential furnishings, such as chairs, sofas and benches. He had a particular talent for lounge chairs, perhaps the most sociable piece of furniture.
Like his fellow adoptive Californians Charles and Ray Eames, Baughman’s furniture has a relaxed and breezy air. He was famously opposed to ostentatious and idiosyncratic designs that were made to excite attention. While many of his chair designs are enlivened by such effects as tufted upholstery, Baughman tended to let his materials carry the aesthetic weight, most often relying on seating and table frames made of sturdy and sleek flat-bar chromed metal, and chairs, tables and cabinets finished with highly-figured wood veneers.
Like his colleagues Karl Springer and the multifarious Pierre Cardin, Baughman’s designs are emblematic of the 1970s: sleek, sure and scintillating.
As you will see from the furniture presented on 1stDibs, Milo Baughman’s designs for the likes of Drexel Furniture, Glenn of California and — for five decades — Thayer Coggin are ably employed as either the heart of a décor or its focal point.
- 'Bounty' Leather Three-Seat Sofa by L. Davanzati for The Pace Collection, 1980sBy Lorenzo Forges Davanzati, Elam, Pace CollectionLocated in Los Angeles, CAA lovely example of the 'Bounty' series three-seat sofa by The Pace Collection in the early 1980s, this deep seated channel-tufted leather sofa was designed by L. Davantazi produced by Elam and retailed by The Pace Collection. Perfect for a cigar, whiskey or wine lounge or any space that can use something a bit modern yet still refined and classy. This channel tufted leather couch retains its original supple leather upholstery in an intriguing deep burgundy-brown color, almost like dark-cognac with beautiful lightly aged leather patina. The sumptuous seats are encased in a dark colored lacquer, providing an attractive modern contrast with the rich and elegant leather. This three-seater sofa has casters for ease of relocation according to occasion and mood or to better suit a view. The back is finished with tufted leather making this sofa look incredible when floating in a room with the back exposed. Curved Art Deco styled arms lend 1980s juxtaposition and character to any room. Similar in style to the Saratoga Sofa by Massimo and Lella Vignelli for Poltronova 1970s, but at a fraction of the price. Plus something you don't get with the Saratoga sofa is the refined style of the elegant channel-tufted leather cushions on this Bounty sofa by The Pace Collection. The Pace Collection also offered the highly sought after collection by Guido Faleschini such as the Tucroma chair which is an interior designer and 20th century Modern design collector's favorite go to chair. Another example is the wild 1970s bed that featured interior design magazine covers when Lenny Kravitz home was featured with the Mariani bed...Category

$11,500 Sale Price25% Off - Paul Frankl 'Speed' Art Deco Living Room Suite in Black Leather, circa 1930sBy Paul FranklLocated in Los Angeles, CAThis incredible Paul Frankl attributed 'Speed' full living room suite is comprised of a three-seat sofa, a 2-seat sofa, armchair and ottoman. The 3-seat sofa and armchair are original 1930s production based on the interior construction details and visible age. The 2-seat sofa and ottoman were created later in the 1980s to match the set and everything was then reupholstered to a thick quality black leather. I personally love this set - the wide arms are perfect for placing a glass of Scotch and an ashtray to enjoy a nice cigar. The deep black color and matching black block feet provide ample masculine style while the shape and silhouette provide a refined and classy vibe. The leather is thick and quality, also smooth and soft to the touch. The collector who acquired this sofa and armchair, purportedly in the 1980s, stated he found what he believed to be a Frankl Galleries (Paul Frankl's 1930s showroom) original example of the Speed sofa...Category

- Pair of Club Chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy, c 1970, SignedBy Sormani, Claudio SalocchiLocated in Los Angeles, CAThis newly reupholstered pair of club chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, circa 1970s, features graceful chrome frames with nubby white bouclé fabric. Signed with 1960s/ 1970s Sormani label as shown in photo gallery. *Note, we have the matching sofa available in another listing. The graceful frames share a design quality with Cassina's LC2 / LC3 design by Le Corbusier, as they are 'buckets of cushions' in similar fashion and comfort. However these Sormani lounge chairs feature some unique subtle details, such as the slight "twist" in the rear legs (see photos). Signed with a Sormani label, this particular rare design is attributed to Claudio Salocchi. While there were several other famous designers who created works for Sormani in this time period, the style best matches Salocchi's work. For collectors looking for something unique and rare within a collection of 1960s/ 1970s Italian designs, this pair of easy chairs are an amazing opportunity. These Cassina LC2 / LC3 style chairs...Category
