FINE AMERICAN CLASSICAL MAHOGANY BOX SOFA New York, c. 1840 This austere and attractive form is distinctly influenced by designs from England and France during the first quarter of the 19th Century, this form known as a "Box Sofa" coming into fashion towards the end of the first quarter of the 19th Century in New York City. It is elegant and free of embellishment, every aspect of it speaking strength. The arms are raised on thick solid mahogany panels, the center faced with banded mahogany veneers such that both arms oppose one another. The frame and crest rail is plain and undistracted, utilizing beautifully grained solid mahogany to lend elegance and beauty to the space. The apron is a series of matched veneers; oxidization and sun distract from what was originally a nearly seamless flow from one panel to the next, a characteristic that could be brought back by a talented finisher. The sofa rests over complex feet with a series of ring turnings over robust reeded balusters. What is noteworthy in this form is it's great comfort for those that like a supportive back in a sofa - with only 18" of seating depth, this is an incredibly comfortable piece to relax in and enjoy if you prefer a shorter seating depth. Unlike most counterparts of the period, this piece has a delightful thinness of profile that allows it to enjoy the great presence of Classicism without the unattractive proportions. Clearly crafted by a craftsman with a precise eye for fine lines and appropriateness of dimension, it is a fine work of outstanding strength that can be actively enjoyed visually and practically in the home. Measurements: 81 1/8" long x 23" deep x 33 1/4" high to crest; 17" high to seat; seating area is 70" long x 18" deep Condition: Upholstery in quite good condition with no noteworthy stains or blemishes other than minor loose threads, etc. Minor dings, scars and abrasions, as expected, clearly depicted in the slideshow. Scattered patches to veneer. Underside frame with added corner blocks and some alterations to strengthen the seat. We have not removed the upholstery on the back and sides to examine the structure. An incredibly fine one-piece corner cupboard formerly acquired at Sotheby's in 2013 for $ 15,000. The original and beautifully worn surface is incredibly lively with a rich texture in the symmetrical brush strokes with the natural rubbing through the paint from over two-hundred years of gentle handling. It is crafted in one piece from pine primary woods and poplar secondary woods and features a nine-light glazed upper door with beautifully molded astragals that opens with a replaced brass knob to reveal an interior divided with two fixed shelves. The lower portion of the cabinet is missing its knob and opens to reveal the single shelf that evenly divides out the space. And most attractive is the size, which is delightfully diminutive and allows it to be a part of any space without overwhelming the interior. An untouched treasure.
