Taichiro Nakai Rare Freeform Sofa for La Permanente Mobili Cantù, 1954

About the Item

Taichiro Nakai rare freeform sofa for La Permanente Mobili Cantù, steel and velvet, Italy, 1954. Talented Japanese designer Taichiro Nakai is mainly known for participating in and winning the “Selettiva del Mobili” competition in Cantù, where this piece was presented in October 1955. This specific couch can be considered a unique piece. On one hand, the sofa shows the typical and iconic three long geometrical steel pieces that support the seatback; on the other hand, the whole structure is supported by four sculptural metal legs and round patinated brass feet, making this unique. The sofa also conserves the original “La Permanente Mobili Cantù” paper sticker on the back on one leg, making it the first Taichiro Nakai sofa ever discovered with such an original paper mark. For all of these reasons, it’s reasonable to consider this couch a prototype from Nakai. However, this freeform sofa embodies a charming construction with an original curvy and refined shape. The sofa lines are simple, clean, energetic, and organic, which are characteristic of Japanese creations with an open and elegant design. Original blue mohair velvet. Excellent condition.
